what does having to be a kafir, infidel, have to do with building schools?

When I first read this i didnt really understand it so i took a double take on it and realized that where they were everything is about who the worship, kinda different from here.

Why would someone say that to him? Is that guy just a mean just a mean person?
After coming back from Africa, he was picked on because he didn't look like he was from Africa and he was always late because he was used to the way of Africa where everything doesn't move as fast.

What I want to know is what is this clothing thing, What does it look like?
This quote that I chose from the book struck me because I do not know what a shalwar kamiz is.
What was happening when this quote is expressed was he had just gotten into the city and he looked horrible. A man that he had met the last time he was there saw him and took him to a place where he could get better clothing. In my opinion when I first heard this I thought of a long dress type thing.
Thus this quote struck me because it used words that I was not aware of what they were about.
